Agentic storefronts: your products inside AI shopping experiences

Shopify's Winter '26 agentic storefronts put your catalogue inside ChatGPT, Claude and other AI agents through UCP. How it works and how to prepare your store.

Agentic storefronts let AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude find your products, put them in a cart and check the shopper out inside the conversation. Shopify announced them in the Winter ’26 RenAIssance Edition, built on an open standard called the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). This article explains how discovery, checkout and orders work, and what to do with your product data now.

Update, November 2026: Shopify Fall ’26 has since added checkout inside Google AI Mode, Gemini and other assistants. For what is live now and the current eligibility rules, read our guide to agentic commerce on Shopify after Fall ’26.

This article is part of our Shopify Winter ’26 series. For the whole release, start with our overview of the Winter ’26 RenAIssance Edition.

What is agentic commerce?

Shopify’s agentic commerce lets your catalogue be found and bought directly inside AI shopping experiences. At launch that included:

  • ChatGPT
  • Claude
  • custom AI agents and assistants
  • any platform that implements UCP

A shopper might ask an assistant “What’s the best shoe for trail running?” or “Find me a sustainable coffee maker for a small kitchen”. Your products can then appear as recommendations inside that conversation.

The agent can search across hundreds of millions of Shopify products. It can read product attributes, compare options, hold a universal cart with products from several merchants and take the shopper through checkout. The shopper doesn’t need to visit several websites.

The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)

UCP is an open standard that gives commerce on the web a common language. It lets four parties communicate securely and consistently:

  • Platforms: AI agents and applications.
  • Merchants: Shopify stores selling products.
  • Credential providers: services that manage buyer identity and authentication.
  • Payment service providers: the processors that handle transactions.

Shopify provides UCP-compliant tools through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). That makes it straightforward for an AI agent to connect to the whole Shopify ecosystem.

How it works: discovery, checkout and orders

Shopify’s version covers the full purchase, from finding a product to tracking the order.

1. Discovery: Shopify Catalog

Agents search every eligible Shopify merchant through the Catalog MCP server. In practice:

  • Your products are searchable alongside those of every other eligible Shopify store.
  • Agents filter by what the shopper wants: price, category, features, sustainability and so on.
  • Results appear as interactive product cards inside the chat.
  • A shopper can browse several merchants’ products in one conversation.

When the shopper picks a product, the agent fetches the variant details it needs to create a checkout session. Discovery leads straight into the purchase.

2. Checkout: universal carts inside the chat

Once the shopper has chosen, the agent can:

  • create a checkout session through MCP
  • manage a universal cart that holds products from several Shopify merchants
  • collect the buyer’s details and payment
  • complete the purchase inside the AI interface

If checkout needs something MCP doesn’t support, such as custom fields or specific merchant requirements, the agent has two options. It can open your web checkout in a browser, or embed checkout using Checkout Kit.

3. Orders: tracking after purchase

In February 2026 this part was announced as coming soon. Once checkout completes, the agent would track:

  • order status and confirmation
  • fulfilment updates and shipping information
  • changes after purchase: refunds, returns and cancellations

Buyers would then see everything about their order without leaving the AI interface. For what is live now, see what is live in agentic commerce after Fall ’26.

Why this matters now

Shoppers increasingly start product research in an AI chat rather than a search engine. In a June 2025 survey of 1,000 consumers in the US, UK and Australia/New Zealand, Gen Z shoppers were nearly as likely to use AI platforms for product research (33%) as search engines (37%) (Commerce and Future Commerce, New Modes survey, 2025).

Traditional SEO optimised your store for Google. Agentic commerce optimises your catalogue for AI agents. The difference:

  • SEO: you compete for visibility in a list of blue links.
  • Agentic commerce: agents recommend your products in context, based on what the shopper asked for.
  • Traditional checkout: shoppers visit your site and check out on your domain.
  • Universal checkout: shoppers buy from several merchants in one transaction.

Brands that invested in SEO early built a lead in Google results. Merchants who prepare for agentic commerce now can establish themselves in this channel early.

What this means for merchants

A new discovery channel

Shoppers can now find your products without visiting your website, seeing a Google ad or scrolling social media. They ask an AI assistant for help, and your product appears in the answer alongside relevant products from other merchants.

Product data quality becomes critical

Agents rely on structured data to make recommendations. When your products sit next to every other eligible store’s, quality decides who gets recommended:

  • Detailed, accurate descriptions help the agent understand what you sell and match it to what the shopper wants.
  • Good images improve how products look in AI interfaces and product cards.
  • Complete variant data (size, colour, material) allows better matching and filtering.
  • Clear categorisation and tags make you easier to find across Shopify Catalog.
  • Competitive pricing and shipping matter when shoppers can compare merchants instantly.

Merchants with clean, well-structured catalogues will do better in agentic commerce.

Selling on intent

In traditional ecommerce, shoppers browse and compare. Agentic commerce is driven by intent: the shopper describes what they need, and the agent finds the best match across every available merchant. That changes the questions you ask:

  • “How do I get traffic to my site?” becomes “How do I make sure my products match shopper intent better than my competitors’ do?”
  • “How do I optimise my homepage?” becomes “How do I optimise my product data so AI agents understand and rank it?”
  • “How do I reduce cart abandonment?” becomes “How do I make sure my checkout works with universal carts?”

How to prepare your store

Shopify handles the technical integration with UCP and the MCP servers. These are the steps you can take now.

1. Audit your product data

  • Give every product a clear, descriptive title that stands out in results.
  • Write detailed descriptions that explain features, benefits and use cases in natural language.
  • Add good images from several angles.
  • Complete every variant option: size, colour, material and so on.
  • Use consistent naming across your catalogue.
  • Check your pricing holds up against the wider Shopify ecosystem.

2. Write for natural language

Agents interpret questions written the way people speak. Your descriptions should reflect how real people talk about your products.

  • Instead of: “Men’s Athletic Footwear – Model X200”
  • Use: “Lightweight trail running shoes for men, designed for rocky terrain and long-distance comfort”

3. Use metafields for structured data

Shopify metafields let you add structured attributes that help agents make better recommendations:

  • materials and sustainability certifications
  • dimensions and weight
  • care instructions
  • compatibility information
  • use cases and the customers each product suits
  • technical specifications

4. Keep checkout compatible

For the smoothest experience with universal carts:

  • Keep custom checkout requirements to a minimum, so buyers aren’t forced out of the AI interface.
  • Use standard Shopify checkout features where you can.
  • Test your checkout flow with Shop Pay and your other payment methods.

5. Check your eligibility

Not every Shopify merchant is included in Shopify Catalog automatically. Make sure your store meets the eligibility requirements for agentic commerce. Shopify has since published detailed Catalog requirements, which we list in our step-by-step guide to agentic commerce on Shopify.

The bigger picture

Agentic commerce changes how ecommerce works:

  • From destination to distribution: your store becomes a data source in a shared catalogue, not just a destination.
  • From browsing to asking: shoppers describe what they need instead of searching and filtering across several sites.
  • From SEO to AI optimisation: optimisation moves from search engines to how AI agents understand your products.
  • From single-merchant carts to universal carts: shoppers can buy from several merchants in one flow.

This doesn’t replace traditional ecommerce. It adds to it. Your Shopify store stays the hub, but your products can now be found and bought through new interfaces, alongside products from other merchants.

What comes next

As AI shopping matures and more platforms adopt UCP, we expect to see:

  • more AI platforms and agents connecting to Shopify’s MCP servers
  • personalisation based on the conversation and the buyer’s history
  • voice shopping through AI assistants
  • closer links with customer service and support after purchase
  • order tracking and management inside AI interfaces
  • loyalty and recommendation schemes that work across merchants

Merchants who prepare early will learn how shoppers use AI agents, and how to compete in a shared catalogue.

Final thoughts

Agentic commerce is Shopify’s bet on how people will shop with AI, built on an open standard. It adds a channel. It does not replace your store. Whether agents pick your products comes down to product data, metafields and a checkout that works outside your site, and you can start on all three now.
