Shopify migration
Magento to Shopify Plus migration
Think Commerce migrates Magento 1 and Magento 2 stores to Shopify and Shopify Plus. We have done it for Christiania Glasmagasin, GaitLine, Majema and the European distributor of SA1NT. We handle the whole move: data, SEO and redirects, theme, integrations and a go-live date planned around your trading calendar.
Why brands leave Magento
The brands we have moved gave us similar reasons:
- Upkeep costs too much. Majema wanted stability and lower maintenance costs after several years on Magento 2.
- Small changes need developers. Christiania Glasmagasin found Magento 2 heavy to work with day to day: even small changes took significant development time.
- New features are slow. Majema wanted a platform that was easier to maintain and faster to build on. GaitLine’s Magento stores were slow to change across markets.
- The store is not performing. SA1NT’s European distributor had a Magento 1 store that was underperforming in Europe.
On Shopify Plus, your team runs the store from the Shopify admin and the platform is hosted for you, so there are no servers to manage.
What the migration covers
- Data. Products, customers and order history move from Magento to Shopify Plus, and we check that the data arrives intact.
- SEO and redirects. Old Magento URLs map to new ones, so customers and search engines following an old link land on the right page.
- Checkout and key features. We build a proof of concept for the features you rely on before the main build. For Majema in 2020, that answered whether their checkout could be customised as it had been on Magento.
- Theme. A custom theme built with your designers, as we did for Majema and SA1NT, a customised theme, as for GaitLine, or a design from our own team.
- Integrations. Your ERP, marketing tools and other systems reconnected through the Shopify API.
- Go-live. Testing, including performance testing ahead of peak trading, and a zero-downtime cutover plan that keeps your store open.

Magento migrations we have delivered
Christiania Glasmagasin: Magento 2, before peak season
Christiania Glasmagasin is a Norwegian kitchen and gift retailer with roots going back to 1739. It had run about 8,000 SKUs on Magento 2 for five years. It chose us because we knew both platforms well. Signing to launch took three months, and the store went live just before peak season. In the year after launch, its conversion rate rose 120% and net revenue 61%. Read the Christiania Glasmagasin case study.
GaitLine: five stores from one Magento instance
GaitLine, a Norwegian-developed shoe brand, ran five D2C regions in a single Magento instance. We moved them to Shopify Plus in under 12 weeks, and they went live a week before Black Friday 2022. Conversion rose 71% in the first 90 days against the same period on Magento. Read the GaitLine case study.
Majema: Magento 2 to a custom Shopify Plus build
We had maintained Majema’s Magento 2 store since 2018. We proved their checkout requirements first, then built a custom theme from scratch with their designer, and a set of flexible content page templates their team uses to run the store. We launched several new features and templates after go-live. Majema’s in-house team now runs the store more efficiently, and new development ships faster than it did on Magento. SA1NT: Magento 1 to Shopify for Europe
SA1NT is an Australian workwear and motorcycle clothing brand. Its European distributor moved from an underperforming Magento 1 store to Shopify. We worked with the distributor and SA1NT’s head office in Australia, and built a custom theme with SA1NT’s designers. It took ten weeks from first conversation to launch. Read the SA1NT case study.
What it costs
Magento migrations start from £10,000, ex VAT. We quote each one after scoping it, because no two Magento setups are alike, and agree a fixed price before work starts. Growth and Partner retainer clients get priority scheduling and 10% off fixed-price projects. Related work, such as new integrations and Nordic market launches, is listed on our fixed-price projects page.
Three of the four Magento moves above took between ten weeks and three months.
After launch
Most of these brands kept working with us after go-live, on new features, design and custom apps. A Shopify retainer gives you a team that knows your store at a fixed monthly price. Moving from WooCommerce or another platform instead? See our Shopify migration overview.
